I used to hate the beach. My parents would pile me and all our stuff in the back of an Avalon for the 6 hour drive south- I was crammed against the door, and I always wondered why we needed so much stuff for just three people in twice as many days.
I’d spend my days moaning about the heat and the sand and the saltwater. I’d cringe at the thought of sharks and crabs and I’d high-tail it back up the boardwalk to the pool. I’d grab my book and sink shoulder deep into the water and disappear into someone else’s story.
These days, there’s not much chance of sinking deep into someone else’s story. I have enough real life stories in my twenty-seven years to fill a lifetime of poolside pages… and no time to read the made up versions written by someone else.
And so I store the words in my heart, and I wear my heart on my sleeve.
Life changes in an instant. The story twists and turns, and the corner hides what’s around it.
But in the end, you grow up, and you drive to the beach… just you, your two boys, and the borrowed Avalon from your parents because it’ll make the drive.
And you dig your toes into the sand, and the sunshine warms your soul… Those boys of yours, can’t keep their head above water for trying, but there’s no fear of sharks, and there’s delight when they find a crab… And the wind blows and deep down, that chlorine smell comes back to you and you find yourself sunk deep into a story and you know, you just know there’s a happy ending coming…
